1-Who it was taken by: John Vachon Time: 1940
2-it is taken outdoors during the day in an urban area
3-there are a lot of people of different ages, they all are dressed up, and the main building catches my eye first
4-there are two well maintained buildings in the picture, nothing surrounds the buildings
5-the tone of the picture is light/ neutral because nothign seems to be happening out of the norm in this photograph
6-My responce to this picture is that I think it is just a picture that captures a busy day in a city of Alabama. There doesn't seem to be any bussle or fighting in it, nor any anger. I also think that this picture shows how it had beenafter the Great Depression because there doesn't seem to be any shabbiness or garbage in the steets and on the buildings also it seems like the people are well dressed and are shopping, so I think they didn't have a shortage of money they might have in the Great Depression.
7-If I could ask the people in that photograh two questions, my first would be what is that building that is the main focus of this picture? The second question I would ask them would be how different was this street during the middle of the Great Depression then how it was in the 1940's?

2-Tis picture is set outdoors, it is during the day, and it is in a rural area
3-There eight peopel in the picture, they all are black and seem to be wearing shabby clothing. Their ages vary and The old building catches my eye first.
4-There is only one house in the picture and it seems to be in bad shape. It seems that the house is surrounded by fields.
5-The picture seems to be sad because the people in the picture don't seem to be happy, which also makes it negative and "dark".
6- My response to this picture is that I feel sad and depressed bcause when I saw the people in the picture they seem to be poor and sad because they don't seem to be at work or have anythign to do. Also the shabby building in the background makes the photo even more sad. When I first saw this picture I noticed that the family of eight must have lived in poverty during the Great Depression due to the facts I listed above and also because their clothes look worn down.
7-If I could ask them two questions I would ask them why they seemed to be standing around waiting for something, and also I would ask them how they were able to survive during the Great Depression.

2-The setting of this picture is outside during the day. It seems to be in an urban area.
3-There aren't any people that I can see in the picture. What catches my eye first is the empty road on the street.
4-There seems to be a few buildings in the photograph. The building that is closest to where the picture was taken looks very shabby, but the city building at the end of the picture seems to be in good condition. The road smeems to be surrounding the structures.
5-The tone of this picture is sad because there doesn't seem to be anyone on the street and the buildings are all alone in the city. This seems negative because city streets are supposed to be filled with people and energy, and this picture is the total opposite. This also makes the picture "dark".
6- My response to this picture is that I am horrified that the Great Depression was able to make the streets of a city empty. When I saw the empty road, which is what my eyes saw first, makes me wonder why there aren't any people there working. I also feel sad because the tone of this picture, which is negative, makes me feel sad for all of the jobless people during the Great Depression.
7-If I could ask two questions, I'd ask the people who are supposed to be working on that street why they aren't. I also would question them with how are they able to live through the Great Depression if they don't have any jobs to get money.

This photograph I think represents this time in history. This is a business, but there are no people there. The structure is deformed and run down. Nowadays a store like that would have a constant flow of teenagers and travelers. It shows how much the economy suffered from the Great Depression.
  1. Write two questions that you might ask the photographer or the subjects of the picture if you had the opportunity to learn more about the photograph or / and its subject(s).
If I had the opportunity to ask the photographer two questions, they would be:
  1. Why did you pick this particular building to describe this concept?
  2. What part of the country were you in when you took this picture?

This picture is of a sidewalk and a business. There are people walking around and it doesn't seem like a very depressed area. I think this picture was taken in an area of the United States that wasn’t greatly affected by the great depression. The men in the picture were dressed in appropriate attire, and the buildings were in ok condition. There are even cars , which most of americans couldn't afford at the time.
  1. Write two questions that you might ask the photographer or the subjects of the picture if you had the opportunity to learn more about the photograph or / and its subject(s).

This picture is of one of the many buildings during the Great Depression. It is run down, and probably out of business. Most businesses went bankrupt making thousands of Americans out of work, and forced to the streets. There are no customers around, and the sign has been torn down. This picture describes what happened to people and businesses all across America.
  1. Write two questions that you might ask the photographer or the subjects of the picture if you had the opportunity to learn more about the photograph or / and its subject(s).

  3. Where did you take this picture?

english_picture1.jpg
1. This photo was taken by Walker Evans (1903-1975) in 1935, in Selma Alabama.
2. The setting of the photograph is outdoors in a urban worn-down street. The picture is well lit and would suggest the the time of the day would be about mid-day.
3. The photo includes about 7 African-American men, around 30 years of age if I had to guess. All of them wearing a suit and a hat. All of them are sitting outside of a little store, doing absolutely nothing. It sticks out to me that everything seems to be messy and unorganized.
4. In this photo there is a store, which is unidentifiable. It doesn't look like it's great condition by the looks of the exterior. The building is in direct contact with neighboring buildings, with a small sidewalk in front.
5. This photo has a heavy, negative tone. The men almost look depressed.
6.It's hard to tell what the men may be doing. It seems that the men sitting outside the store have been looking for jobs, with no success. They are just sitting outside this store because they have nothing else to do, because they don't have a job. They've seem to have lost hope and don't know what else to do. Being African-American definitely hurt their job situation, also. This was the situation for most men back during the Great Depression. The times were rough, and even keeping your job, was a job in itself. Judging by this picture, and many others, most of the town, including this area, were unorganized and torn up. The area doesn't look like an adequate place for living.
7.
  • 1. What was the name of the store?
  • 2. What were the men doing there?

Picture 2 -- David S.

1. This photo was taken by Dorothea Lange in June 1936.
2. The setting of the photo is outside. It is fairly light out. The time would probably be around mid-morning or afternoon. The photo is very rural.
3. This photo includes no people. It catches my eye that the soil looks rocky and dry.
4. There is an old home in the picture, and is very spaced out. The home is surrounded by a farm and one other building.
5.The photo has a light tone, but a negative one also because of the dry soil and dead crops. It is not very pleasing to the eye.
6. This photo looks like it took place in the "dust bowl" of the western US. The crops are dead and dry, and the soil looks very unfertile. The land looks hot and home looks abandoned, since there are no people to be seen. If the family did abandon the land, it is for the obvious reason that crops cannot be grown in these conditions, and they were forced to move on to another place where they could make a living.
7.
  • 1. Was the house abandoned?
  • 2. Was all the land in the surrounding area in the same condition?

1. This photo was taken by Jack Delano in May 1941.
2. The setting is outdoors and it is very light out. I would say it is around mid-day. The setting is very rural.
3. In the photo there are two people, both African-American wearing worn working clothes. The lady is carrying a box on her head. It seems that they are in the middle of no where.
4. There are not structures in this photo.
5. The seems to be light, and I guess I would also have to say there is a negative tone.
6. In this photo there are two people who seem to be carrying a load with there wagon type vehicle. The poor people have no other means of transportation and have to carrying everything into town, wherever the town may be, by there own strength, or on the wagon. This was the same for most other men and women of this time who may be looking to sell or deliver things. Although it was hard work, it was necessary if they wanted to make a living.
7.
  • 1. What were the intention of the people?
  • 2. Why were they sitting there?

he_fields.jpg
1.This photo was taken by Dorthea Lange in July of 1936.
2. This photo was taken outside in the cornfields. I would say it was taken around late afternoon because the lighting is somewhat dimmed. It was taken in a farm outside a small town.
3. In the photograph you see two young girls. As the information about the photo sayd, they both belong to an African American family of share croppers. The one in the back is about seven years of age and the one in the front is about ten years old. They were old and unfitted dresses and large hats to keep the sun out of their faces and eyes. As you can see, neither of the girls were shoes. What catches my eye first in the picture is the girl in back, who looks so small to be doing such strenous work.
4. All you can truly see in th ephotograph is fields with no crps for miles. There are no building or water pumps that are visible. If you look very closely you can make out what looks to be a wire fence.
5. The photo is negative. it is somewhat dark ad heavy because the picture reminds me f slavery..
6. After viewing this photgraph, you can easily see that these girls are put up to work that they may not be physically capable of so they can help to support their family. As more information of the photograph says: "tenant family that lives off the earnings of barely fifty dollars a year." That money is barely enough to buy a month's worth of grocery's let alone to support a family of seven for the entire year. Their living situation must be excessively difficult. This is how many African American familiees lived during the Depression because they were often the first to be laid off from their jobs.
7. If I were to ask the photographer two questions I would ask her:
1. Were the girl's upset about their large work load or did they take it on graciously?
2. All I can see in this picture is barren farming land that is meant to be cornfields. Was there vegetation or buildings in an area that is unvisible?

Picture 2, Tess G.

sidewalk_sceene.jpg
1. This photo was taken by Walker Evans in December of 1935.
2. This photo is aken outside and is kind of well lit. It is in a rural or suburban setting. It looks to be about midday.
3. There are eight people in the photo. Most likely, they are unemployed because of the Great Depression. I think this because they all look to be middle age, but they are loitering at the local trading post. They also look poor ad ragged. All of them wear dark clothing and hats. It might be cold outside because they all are wearing coats of some sort. In the photo, many of the men appear to be smoking cigars. They are also speaking with one another. What catches my eye first in the photo is the men gathers on the bench in front of the trading post. They all have their heads down and none of them seem very happy.
4. In the photograph, the men are gathered around an old trading post. The building is old and dusty with a sign reading "Retail, Wholesale, Chickens, Eggs, Feed, Flour, Grocers." I would think the old building was abandoned if it had not been for the many people in front. To the side of the trading post is antoher building. In front there is a dirt road.
5. The photo is negative. I would say the tone is very heavy and drk because of the said people in front. They all look discouraged and upset.
6. When I saw this picture, I immeadiatly saw the sadness and desperation of the people. It is most likely that all these capable men are unemployedd because it is very unusual for them to loiter outide a trading post. The trading post in the picture also looks as if it is in great distress. not many people look to have bought something from the trading. The Great Depression has obviously had great effects on this business.
7. If I were to ask the photographer two questions I would ask:
1. What exactly were all these people doing outside of the Trading Post and why were they all wearing dark clothing?
2. Were many of the stores and shops in the city like this?

Picture 3, Tess G

houses_of_depression.jpg
1. This photo was taken by Jack Delano in May of 1941.
2. This photo was taken outdoors. It has very strong lighting. It is in a rural area. It looks to be about noon because there are no noticable shadows in the picture.
3. There are two African American children in the photo. The own standing closest to the door looks to be a teenage girl. There is also a small boy on the other side who is younger, probably about five to ten years old. They both have no shoes on and wear clothes that are most likely homemade. Both of the children hold their hands close to their mouths. The young girl by the door catches my eye first because of her light dress in contrast to the shade under the awning.
4. In the photo, there is a house that is extremely small. Many of the shingles of the siding have fallen off and reveal the inner structure. The window has a large crack in it and the door is made out of mesh that doesn't fit the frame very well. The steps in front are make shift as are the poles holding up the awning. Behind this house is another building that looks to be a bit larger but in the same general condition. All along the road there are telegraph lines. The building reminds me of the prison camps I have seen in pictures of Nazi Europe.
5. This photo is positive and somewhat neutral or heavy. I really can't tell what the expressions of the children are or what their purpose is there, but I can presume they aren't very happy if the photo reminds me of concentration camps.
6. When I saw this photo, it was very saddening because of the poor state of the home. It looks barely bi enough to be a garage let alone a home. I was also very upset to see that a residence reminded be clearly of prison camps were people starved and died. The upkeep of the hoem looks so poor and the quality of the house looks so ruined. It is very upseting to think that someone has to live in these conditions.
7. If I were to ask the photographer two questiosn I would ask:
1. What is the purpose of the larger building in back of the small house?
2. Why are their so many telephone poles and wires at the side of the house?
